How much meat do I need for a work BBQ?

How much meat do I need for a work BBQ?

Whether it's Friday Beersies, a Work Shout, running a Breakfast Tool Box or a Team Lunch, we've got you sorted with a wide variety of options.

The hardest part is 'guestimating' how much meat you will need, so start off with the number of people you're feeding and work from there.

You will probably have an idea if your crew are hearty eaters or smaller ones but as a general rule we would cater approximately 250g of meat/protein per person. (An average Scotch/Ribeye steak at a restaurant sits around 200-300g) Provided there are additional sides, Breads, Salads, Potatoes etc. 250g of protein should be the balance between some of your larger and smaller eaters.

Lets say you had 12x people for a breakfast toolbox, we would recommend:

18x Sausages

18x Rashers of Bacon

12x Eggs

18x Hash Browns

And two loaves of bread that you can toast!

If I have 12x people, why do you recommend 18x of some items?

When ordering small items like sausages, bacon, bread and hash browns, count on 'one and half servings per person.' You could also do this with the eggs.

If you have those 12x people for lunch you could have a wide selection of the following:

12x Sausages

18x Bacon

8x Chicken Kebabs

8x Lamb Grillsticks

8x Burger Patties

8x Minute Steaks

One and a half pieces of Garlic Bread per person

And a Salad or Slaw!

Why only 8x of each? Won't someone miss out....?

If you think that your crew can sit down at a meal and eat one of everything then by all means order one of each, but it's more likely to give them the meat sweats! Chances are they will pick 3 protein options and not everyone likes the same thing, so you'll be safe mixing it up a little.

When it comes to lunch or dinner, we use the same principles with bacon, but it depend on how many different meats you will be ordering. If you have a wide selection you could lessen the number for the sausages.

For example, if you have a mix of: Burger Patties, Steaks, Chicken Kebabs, Beef Grillsticks, Lamb Grillsticks etc. Then you shouldn't need one of each per person.

With both bacon and sausages, some people will have two, some will have one and you might have someone that skips them altogether. But it means your heartier eaters won't go hungry and your lighter eaters shouldn't miss out.

Keeping it basic:

If you want to keep it basic for your 12 people -

12x Steaks - 150g

18x Sausages

Because there is less of a selection, we need to make sure there is a steak for everyone and extra sausages again so no-one is left hungry. And this time we made the steaks a bit heavier as there are less options to choose from. This would cater at approx 225g of meat per person.
