Our Story

The Kiwi Butcher Shop originally started life as Martins Butchery up on Brooklands Road in New Plymouth. Back in the days where Butcher shops were a staple in every neighbourhood and over 20 of them lined the Main Road in Devon Street, New Plymouth.

Martins Butchery focused on Home Kills, supplying Bakeries and had a small open window display cabinet from which they sold their goods to the people of nearby Vogeltown and Brooklands.

Peter Morrison began his apprentice there in 1967, over 50 years ago. He worked his way up the ranks, eventually purchasing all the shares from Ken Martin and Ivan Berry and became the proud owner of Martins Butchery. In 1998 his son Stephen joined the business served his apprenticeship, working alongside his Dad. 

As young bloods do, Stephen was eager to make the store bigger and better, he thought they should grow the business to include increase their wholesale division and add in a larger retail shop. That meant we needed to move in order to expand. In 2002 the butchery moved to Leach St, which is where we are still based today and the butchery name was changed to 'The Kiwi Butcher Shop'. Peter, his son Stephen and his grandson Jamie still all work in the butchery today and the Morrison family continues to own The Kiwi Butcher Shop. In April 2019, Stephen became the proud new owner of The Kiwi Butcher Shop - Keeping it in the family.

Some things have remained the same over the years, (like our award winning sausages) but we've grown and expanded with the times, (No dust on these bangers!). We cater to furry family members, with our own 'Pet Corner' where the Dog Roll is made in store and there bones can be found on the freezer. There are Rubs, Sauces, Injections/Marinades and a selection of meats cut for our Pit Masters and lovers of Low N Slow BBQ. Last year we introduced Smoked Cheese Kranskys and Biltong, this year we have expanded our range of Award Winning Bacon to include BBQ Bourbon, Thai Sweet Chilli and Cinnamon Apple Smoked - Dry Cure Streaky Bacons.

The shop produces its own Award Winning Bacon & Sausages and makes Traditional Brawn, Swiss Roll & Beef Swirls, which are still a favourite with lots of locals who have shopped with us for the past 50 years.

More than ever we are proud to be a part of the history and fabric of Taranaki. We would like to thank our loyal customers for their support over the years and we hope to be serving folks in the Taranaki our Award Winning Sausages and Bacon, for many more to come.
